Ritual Mechanics with Katie Rose Thorn

One of the first premises used by many traditions of contemporary Witchcraft is the axiom, 'know thyself' and in this series of workshops we will come to an understanding of what this means through learning and exploring the fundamental practices of witchcraft, the mechanics of ritual and by establishing and deepening your relationship with yourself, nature and the Gods.

My aim in facilitating these workshops is to present the tools I've learned over the past thirteen years of Craft practice which, with dedication and time, can bring you into a state of deep self-knowledge and ability to work in consort with the Gods and the landscapes in which they are immanent in your daily life. These are fundamental practices aimed at beginners to intermediates who would like to deepen their understanding of the Craft within a group setting. The tools presented can be used in collaboration with an established solitary or family practice.

Each lesson takes you step by step through the processes of ritual, but with a twist, for we will explore the deep meaning of each aspect and its application in developing our spiritual lives. Through journaling, dance, meditation and sound we cover pre-ritual work, circle casting, elemental invocation, welcoming the Gods, the sacred dance, magic and celebration ceremony, deep magic, banishing, and opening the circle to the Great Work and the social justice aspects of a living Craft.

It is my hope that as seeds, these practices are able to burst forth to bring greater beauty, truth, power, wisdom and love into your life and the lives of those you touch.

Workshops 1 through 5

Witchcraft is an art, craft and science of life. As witches we come to know our place within nature and through knowing our place in nature we open to stepping fully into our humanity, our divinity and to the luminous limitless divine. The first steps in developing an understanding of the breadth of our human/divine natures is to get in touch with life¹. Over the first five workshops we open to The Way and begin by defining witchcraft and lay the first stones of how to build a practice.

Our theory covers definitions of the Craft, fertility and ecstatic traditions, witchcraft as spiritual revolution and anarchy of the spirit (self-possession), developing daily practice, the laws of magic, archetypes, the parts of the soul, chanting, prayer and mantra.

The exercises for these lessons revolve around engaging posture, breath, will and focus in meditation practice and explore energetic exercises such as four by four breathing, rose meditation and the prayer for alignment.

We also reflect upon what has brought each of us to these workshops and work in partnerships to discover what our hopes and expectations are of ourselves and the group. We then widen our awareness and enter into developing priest/ess mind, or multidimensional mindedness.

Workshop 6- 10

Learning the cycles of life and death, grief and joy deepen our understandings of our relationships with ourselves, our communities and the Wild. In the follow five workshops our focus turns from within to without and we study the cycles and tides of land and sun, moon, sky and wind. We explore the masculine and feminine cycles within ourselves and dance to honor the cycles.

Workshops 11-20

With a solid theoretical and practical foundation in place, our work begins to deepens into thorough ritual engagement. Over these ten weeks we focus upon circle casting and ritual invocation. We explore the elementals; air, fire, water and earth and our relationships to them within ourselves. We explore each element over two weeks; its tools, associations and energies. Our exercises include the Feri tradition pentacles; the Iron, Pearl, Guilded and Rust pentacles.

Workshop 21- 25

In these five workshops we explore the powers below and above. We look into our ancestry, astrology and open further to developing our relationships with the Gods by learning how to part the veil and begin the work of spell crafting, esbat and sabbat celebration, healing and divination.

Workshop 26

In this final workshop we open the circle to the Great Work and explore the social justice aspects of a living craft. Our ritual tool is the pentacle of autonomy and we finish with a end of workshops ritual of dedication and intention to continuing to develop your Craft.

Workshops are held at the Sacred Tree, upstairs at the Pixie Collective 374 High St, Northcote.

Katie Rose Thorn is a magic worker, traditionally trained in the occult arts. Her journey began in Western Australia where as a child she was raised by a catholic mother and druid father and as a teenager began exploring the realms of magic and witchcraft through books, her father's guidance and her own imaginings and rituals.

At nineteen she met professional reader Korin George and began an intimate apprenticeship in the arts of palmistry, tarot and psychic development. In the same year she also began outer court training with The Temple Coven in Western Australia and on her 22nd birthday was initiated into the coven and the Gardenerian Tradition which she still remains a beloved member of. Three years ago she began studying the Feri Tradition of Witchcraft and upon the recurrence of intense dreams about the Yarra River incited a move to Melbourne where she met an Elder of, and commenced training in the Feri Tradition.

In 2009, while studying women's studies, she worked as the women's officer at Edith Cowan University and has held public ritual and facilitated IWD events. She has worked as a reader in many occult shops and at festivals between Perth and Melbourne, including Spell Box and The Sacred Tree, the Seven Sisters festival, the Rainbow Serpent Festival and the Renaissance festival.

As a part of her ongoing training towards an integrative High Priestesshood, Katie is currently studying a degree in Anthropology and Sociology which she intends to combine with her studies of the Feri and Gardenerian traditions in order to facilitate practitioner's understanding of how the rites and rituals of contemporary Witchcraft can provide pathways and contexts towards healing trauma and living a deeply integrated spiritual life.

Katie is passionate about Australian land care and believes that the 'medicine for all things' is truly contained within developing a multidimensional relationship to this beautiful Country.
